Backbrief Deal Check
Know what a deal costs and commits you to before you sign.
Give Deal Check a proposal, quote or contract. It adds up the cost from the document’s own numbers and quotes the commitments the document states, each with its page or line. It shows where the price sits against offers it names and what the purchase has to return to pay back on your numbers. It tags every promise in the pitch, so you can see which ones it could not back with a source. Then it writes the exact questions to take to your lawyer or accountant.
- What the deal costs over its term and what it commits you to, with every figure and term quoted from the document
- Where the price sits against named offers, and the return the purchase needs to pay for itself, on your numbers
- Each promise in the pitch tagged verified, unverified or vendor claim, and the questions for a licensed professional
$79, paid once. One license, one person.
Runs inside Claude Code, Anthropic’s coding assistant. You need it installed and signed in, and a project folder.
Analysis, not legal, tax or financial advice. A pass is not a guarantee of any outcome of the deal.
All sales are final: refund policy and license terms
What you get
Markdown files in your project folder, filed by date and counterparty. This is the layout of a report. It contains no findings; those come from your document.
| Part | What it holds |
|---|---|
| What this deal costs and commits you to | The opening block. A cost table: each line item with its amount, the quote and its page or line, and the total over the term from the document’s own numbers. Where a fee has no stated amount, the total reads “at least” the sum plus an amount the document does not state. Then the commitments the document states, each quoted, then the return the purchase needs to pay back, then the promises it could not back. |
| Summary table | One verdict per section and the overall verdict. The overall verdict is the worst section verdict. NOT CHECKED carries into it, so a report cannot read as a pass because something did not run. |
| Price against market | Where the price sits against named like-for-like offers: its rank among them and how far it sits from their median, each offer with its link and the date read. Also the structure of the price: every component, the price at renewal and any escalator, any “regular price” or “valid until” statement, and whether the pitch, quote and contract state the same price. When it cannot find enough comparable offers, this section reads NOT CHECKED and lists what was searched. |
| Payback | What the purchase has to return, and by when, on your numbers and on contribution margin rather than revenue. Low, expected and high volumes. Your figures are recorded as verified by nothing. |
| Pitch claims ledger | Every result, case study, customer claim, guarantee and comparison in the pitch, quoted and tagged verified, unverified or vendor claim, with the source and the date read. A seller’s statement about its own results is a vendor claim until an independent source says otherwise. Unverified means unchecked, not false. A claim a source shows false makes the section stop. |
| Commitment map | Term, auto-renewal, cancellation notice, exclusivity, IP and data, payment schedule, fees and escalators, liability caps, governing place and dispute terms. Each is located and quoted in the document’s own words with its page or clause, beside the other passages a professional should read with it. A term it cannot find reads NOT FOUND, never “none”. |
| Risk rows and options | One risk row per commitment, each with your acceptance in your words, a mitigation, or “awaiting owner decision”. Then the options: sign as is, negotiate named terms, defer, do nothing. Each carries its cost. The report ranks none and records no decision. |
| Findings and fix list | Each finding carries its location, the quoted evidence, a step another person can run to reproduce it, and the date read. A finding missing a field is not reported. The fix list is numbered. Items addressed to whoever wrote the proposal ask them to state, supply, reconcile or source something. The rest are marked owner decision. |
| Questions for a licensed professional | Written so an attorney or accountant who never saw the report can answer them: the document, its date, the parties as the document names them, the quoted passage and the question. Whether a licensed attorney has reviewed the document is always the first. |
| Saved deal file | The figures, terms, your numbers and the promises, saved beside the report so you can check back after you sign. |
A pass means no confident weakness was found against the checks that ran. It is not a guarantee of any outcome of the deal, and a check that did not run says so.
Before you see it, the report goes to a verifier running in a fresh context, which reads it once for the legal boundary. Confirmed findings get fixed. Judgment calls are listed for you.
How it works
You give Deal Check the document and one line on what you want to know. Claude asks a few questions first, then reads the whole document. Everything is filed in your project folder.
/deal-check- The full report. Before it reads, it asks what you want to know, the counterparty and the dates, the numbers for the payback section, any comparable quotes you already hold, where you and the other side are, and whether the thing you are buying uses AI to make decisions about people or to generate content shown to customers. It builds the commitment map first, because the cost total, the payback and the risk rows draw on it. It lists anything it could not read, such as an unreadable scan, a missing exhibit or a document the contract points to that you did not supply. The report and the saved deal file are filed in your project.
/quote-check- Price against market and payback only, for when you hold a quote and no contract yet. The sections on the pitch, the commitments and the risks say they were not run. The report notes that a quote is not the contract: any later contract is a different document and needs its own review.
/commitment-map- The commitments alone, each quoted with its page or clause, the passages a professional should read beside it, and the questions for a licensed attorney.
/deal-recheck- The check back, after you sign or at a milestone. Give it the saved deal file and tell it what you paid, what was delivered and which promises held. It reports promise by promise: held, not held or NOT CHECKED, on your report alone. It sets what you paid against the cost line as arithmetic. It recomputes payback on your reported figures, and labels any change “moved with”, never “caused”. It restates the next date the document gives, quoted, with the days remaining. A “not held” is a fact to carry to a professional, not a finding about what the other side owed. Your figures are verified by nothing, and the report says so. The suggested check-in is the first renewal or cancellation-notice date the document states, or 90 days after signing when it states none. The 90 days is a product default, not a known interval. Deal Check has no server and watches nothing, so you start the check-in.
Lost? Type /bb, or /next for where the project stands.
What it never does
Deal Check reads, quotes and reports. It does not say whether to sign, what a clause means for your rights, or what to change. Those questions belong to a licensed attorney, and the report writes them so an attorney who never saw the report can answer them. It does not write or negotiate the proposal, sign, pay, send, contact the other side or submit a form. It does not state what the law requires in a named place. It shows where a price sits against offers it names, judges no price and sets none. A term it cannot find reads NOT FOUND, which is a report on the search and not a statement that the document lacks the term. It gives analysis, not legal, tax or financial advice, and it promises no outcome. Every report says an AI model helped produce it.
What you need
Claude Code, installed and signed in. A project folder. The proposal, quote or contract, and the numbers you want the payback section to use.
Claude Code is Anthropic’s coding assistant. It runs in a terminal or in the desktop app. Give Deal Check the document as a file, a URL or pasted text, with every exhibit, schedule and order form, and any document the contract points to. A part it does not receive is listed as not read, and every term that could live there reads NOT CHECKED. You need no other accounts and no keys. Deal Check runs on your own Claude Code access, whatever plan or billing it uses, and has no server of its own. When it looks for comparable offers, the searches use the product category and public figures. Nothing from your document goes into a search. A check that cannot run says so in the report.
Install: about two minutes. Unzip the download, open Claude Code in the folder and type read the README.md in this folder and install this for me. Claude asks for your project folder and whether Deal Check goes in every project or in one project, copies the pieces, runs /verify-install and offers /setup. Then run /deal-check with your document.
Who it is for
For youif you are about to sign or pay for a proposal, quote, agency pitch, software plan, contract or course offer, and you want the cost, the commitments and the pitch’s claims laid out with their sources before you do. You hold the document. You work in Claude Code or will install it for this.
Not for youif you want it to say whether to sign, explain what a clause means for your rights, or tell you what to change. Those are an attorney’s work, and the report hands you the questions. Also not for you if you want someone to write or negotiate the proposal, or a promise about how the deal turns out. Deal Check checks when you run it. It does not watch a deal after you sign.

FAQ
Will it tell me if the contract is safe to sign?
No. Deal Check does not say whether a contract is safe, whether to sign, what a clause means for your rights, or what to change. It finds and quotes what the document says, adds up the cost from the document’s own numbers, runs your payback arithmetic on your figures, tags the pitch’s claims, and writes the questions an attorney would need to answer those things. A pass means no confident weakness was found against the checks that ran. It is not a guarantee of any outcome of the deal, and a check that did not run says so.
Does it replace a lawyer or an accountant?
No. Nothing Deal Check produces is legal, tax, financial, insurance or investment advice, and using it creates no professional relationship. The first question in every report asks whether a licensed attorney has reviewed the document, in the place whose law it names as governing. Tax and accounting points go in a separate list of questions for a licensed accountant.
Will it tell me what the right price is?
No. It shows where the quoted price sits against the named offers it found: its rank among them and how far it sits from their median, each offer with its link and the date read. It judges no price and sets none. When it cannot find enough like-for-like offers, the section reads NOT CHECKED and says what it searched.
What if the document does not say how to cancel or renew?
That row reads NOT FOUND, with the words searched and the pages read. NOT FOUND reports the search. The tool may have missed the passage, or it may sit in a document you did not supply, so the row does not say the document lacks the term. Each NOT FOUND becomes a question for your attorney.
How does the payback section work?
You supply your own numbers: what the purchase should produce each month, your price per unit, your variable cost per unit, other costs of using it, a low, an expected and a high volume, your cash and your horizon. Deal Check uses contribution margin rather than revenue and prints the arithmetic: what the purchase must return and the month cumulative contribution reaches the cost in each case. Your figures are recorded as verified by nothing, and the result is arithmetic on what you gave it, not a forecast. A missing number makes the check NOT CHECKED. Deal Check does not fill the gap from a benchmark.
What does NOT CHECKED mean?
A check could not run, and the report says why and what would run it. It is never a pass, and it carries into the overall verdict.
What is the AI readiness section?
Every run asks one question: does the thing you are buying use AI to make or influence decisions about people, or to generate content shown to customers? If so, the report gains a section that lists what would need checking and the questions for a licensed professional. Its verdict is Not verified or Needs expert review. It never returns a pass and never states what the law requires in a named place.
Does it contact the other side or send anything?
No. Deal Check reads. It does not contact the counterparty, send the fix list, negotiate, sign or pay. Items on the fix list addressed to whoever wrote the proposal ask them to state, supply, reconcile or source something, and sending them is your decision.
What if the download is broken?
Write to contact@ashecorp.com from the address you bought with. A person replies within five business days and makes it right: a fix, a fresh copy, or a refund if neither of those puts it right. Otherwise all sales are final.
